Recording Equipment for Musical
Instruments

The very first recording devices were scientific instruments. They were used to capture and study sound waves. They were capable of recording voices and other sounds long before the phonograph.

The most famous of these was Leon Scott's Phonoautograph which he invented in 1857. This device used a horn to collect and direct sound to a flexible diaphragm placed at the small end. Attached to the diaphragm was a stylus and lever assembly that allowed the point to scratch out a line on a rotating cylinder beneath it.

Whew. Things have really changed. I remember getting a little Radio Shack cassette recorder when I was little. It had a microphone on a cord and I used it to set in tape stone my earliest music. Played back it sounded like a transistor radio but it was me.

Today massive multi-track recorders are available for relatively very affordable prices. You can now put a 16-track studio in your bedroom the Beatles could only have fantasized about. Studio quality mics, acoustic guitar pickups and all the accessories needed to start your own musical dynasty can now be found on the web for low costs. You can do it.
