Musical Instrument Amplifiers and
Effects
A musical amplifier is an
electronic signal amplifier designed to make the sounds produced
by an electric or acoustic musical instrument louder so that it
will produce sound through a loudspeaker. The signal can also be
modified by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain frequencies
and adding electronic effects.
|
|
The amplifier has a
preamplifier which amplifies the voltage of the signal
from the electronic instrument, and a power amplifier
which delivers a higher current to the speaker to
produce sound. There are also microphone preamps used
before major amplification. |
|
The preamplifier part
of the amp may also include electronic effects. Popular
effects are distortion, chorus, delay, phase shifting
and variants of reverb. Amps may use tubes (or valves)
or solid state (transistor) devices, or a mixture of
both.
When the Beatles played Shea Stadium in New York, they
only used Vox
AC100's. That is only 100 watts per amp through a sound
system designed for sporting events not music. It's hard
to imagine anyone there hearing any songs at all.
Musical amplifiers have come a very long way from then
